Digital Marketing for Beginners

Introduction

Did you know that, on average, people are spending more than 6 hours online daily? How much do you spend?

When I saw this, I was more curious, and I researched more about it. I read one study that says over 5.07 billion people around the world now use social media; 259 million new users have come online within the last year.

Digital marketing is continuously growing. So it is necessary to know about it today. Digital marketing for beginners can feel confusing. When I heard about digital marketing, I had similar questions – what is digital marketing? Why does it matter? How does it work? I had many questions, just like any newcomer.

I started my journey into digital marketing by reading many blog articles and watching videos on YouTube and Instagram; however, I still felt confused because everything I learned was overwhelming. Everyone has different perspectives, definitions, and paths about digital marketing.

I didn’t know how to research effectively or where to begin. But when I started learning digital marketing, all my doubts cleared one by one, and I got clarity about this. That’s why, after gaining knowledge in digital marketing, I chose to create this blog to help you in avoiding the same problems I faced in my initial days.

How to become an A+ digital marketer?

In this blog, I will explain what digital marketing is. Why is it important to learn digital marketing? How does it work? I will also share some free courses that can help you learn digital marketing and earn a certificate.

I have made everything clear and simple so you can understand it easily and learn more about digital marketing. If you read this blog all the way to the end, I assure you that all your questions will be answered, and you will be ready to start learning digital marketing on your own.

What is digital marketing for beginners?

Imagine you run a T-shirt printing business. Your T-shirts are of high quality, have unique designs, and are priced affordably for everyone. Your business operates offline. On the other hand, another person has a similar T-shirt printing business. His design quality is not too much better than yours, and his T-shirts are priced higher. Yet, he attracts more customers than you do. People are more aware of his business than yours.

What is the difference between you and that person?

Well, it’s because of digital marketing. You operate a business offline, so people nearby you and your family members know you. You don’t have an online presence, so when people search for print t-shirts, you don’t appear there, and the other person who did digital marketing for his brand appears there, and people start purchasing from his brand.

Now understand what digital marketing is –

Digital marketing is all about promoting and selling products and services on different digital platforms like search engines, apps, websites, social media, and other online platforms. It creates awareness about products and services, engages audiences, and converts them into customers. Now for your brand, you can create a website and advertise it using ads and SEO to reach your audience. Engage with them, and you’ll show up on Google. When people look for printed T-shirts, your brand will be visible. People will start recognizing you, and you will get new customers.

Now you might be wondering how digital marketing began with the rise of the internet, social media, and other digital platforms. But before all that, how did people promote their products?

You may notice ads on TV or radio. You saw the large billboard on the street and flyers. All of these are known as traditional marketing. People use these methods for their marketing.

Why learn digital marketing?

Once you understand digital marketing, you might ask, “Why do I need to learn digital marketing?”

In today’s world, everyone is online and using various digital platforms. Every startup, brand, and individual seeks an online presence to gain recognition and attract more customers. Without an online presence, your business will face limitations.

Here I mentioned some points so you can understand the importance of digital marketing.

  • Compared to traditional marketing, digital marketing is more affordable and efficient.
  • You can reach your ideal audience without spending excessive time and money.
  • You can connect with your audience using different types of digital marketing techniques and turn them into customers.
  • You can establish trust with your audience.
  • With digital marketing, you can reach a worldwide audience.
  • It will assist you in understanding people’s needs and issues so you can provide them with the best solutions.

1. Provide you important data – Digital marketing allows you to see key analytics about your customers, how they move through the buying process, and what products or services they are interested in. You can use this data to understand what is effective and make informed choices to expand your business.

2. Helps you connect with more people – Digital marketing lets you reach a larger, more worldwide audience compared to traditional marketing methods. For instance, by 2028, there will be more than 6 billion users on social media.

3. It’s budget-friendly – digital marketing costs less than traditional methods, such as TV or print ads. With options like pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. You can also design very specific campaigns that give you a higher return on investment.

4. Provides better engagement – You can use various digital marketing channels to keep your audience interested and develop brand loyalty. For example, starting a blog with helpful content can increase your knowledge, draw in visitors, and increase their chances of making a purchase. HubSpot reports that 56 percent of people say they’ve bought something from a company after reading a blog post.

For example, your t-shirt printing business is not online; promoting your products on digital platforms can help you attract more customers. This way, you can reach your target audience efficiently without spending too much money or time. You can establish trust with your audience and connect with them, which will help your brand develop a strong online presence.

Digital marketing is continuously expanding. In my research, I found that about 58% of small businesses engage in some type of digital marketing. In 2024, India generated over 900,000 digital marketing jobs, and this figure is continuously growing.

If you’re looking to enhance your online presence, attract more customers, and develop your brand but are unsure where to begin, keep reading this article until the end.

Now you know the importance of digital marketing. But the question is, how does it work? How you can apply different types of digital marketing for your brand.

How Does Digital Marketing Work?

Digital marketing is about making and sharing content through digital media channels like websites, landing pages, social media, email, and mobile apps. It also involves promoting that content using different strategies across paid, earned, and owned digital channels. These strategies include SEO, SEM, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, content marketing, social media, email, text messaging, and more.

Before you start promoting your brands, first research the market around your niche.

There is a two pillars of research –

  1. Market research
  2. Competitor analysis

Market research – “it’s all about viewing the market from the customers’ perspective.” It involves understanding what people desire, what they require, what challenges they face, and how they act. When you know what to promote and who to promote it to, it minimizes uncertainty and boosts your chances of success.

There are some steps to start market research –

  • Define your goal – be specific about what you aim to address and what your niche is.
  • Identify your target audience – know exactly who you want to reach. You should always be aware of your target audience’s age, qualifications, etc.
  • Choose your method – this refers to how you will research your market, such as through surveys, interviews, observations, etc.
  • Collect the data – implement your selected method. Research your market and gather data that helps you understand people’s challenges.
  • Analyze the data – search for trends, market gaps, and opportunities. Then begin to work on those.
  • Draw conclusions – convert your findings into actionable strategies. Take steps to address people’s issues.

Competitor analysis – It involves looking at what others are doing, recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, and finding opportunities for yourself. It’s similar to standing in front of a mirror – you can see your strengths and areas for improvement.

To begin competitor analysis, follow these steps:

  • Make a list – identify both your direct and indirect competitors (those with different products but the same audience).
  • Learn the basics – discover where they operate, what they sell, and who their customers are.
  • Strengths and weaknesses – identify what they excel at and where they lack.

After the market research, you can easily decide how you can do digital marketing for your brand.

Now the final part comes

Choose digital marketing channels. There are many types of digital marketing where you can promote your brand.

  1. SEO (search engine optimization) – you can build a website and enhance it with SEO so that it shows up in Google search results when people look for anything related to your niche.
  2. Content marketing – you can create helpful blogs, videos, and infographics to draw in and educate your target audience.
  3. Social media marketing – by using social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, you can advertise your brand through posts and reels, engage your followers, and create a community.
  4. Email marketing – you can send tailored emails to update your audience about new offers or to establish trust and relationships.
  5. Google Ads – you can also launch ad campaigns to raise awareness for your brand, helping people connect more with it.
  6. Influencer marketing – you can partner with influencers to promote your brand to their audience.

Now you understand how digital marketing functions and how you can enhance your online presence using various strategies. There are numerous strategies and platforms that you need to learn to operate and improve from.
